turret having a range of tiles

what would be the ideal solution to having a turret with a range of tiles. like, if there comes an enemy onto a certain tile that is within the range of the turret, it starts shooting the enemy as long as it is on the tile. i could give enemies a rigidbody and then use custom boxcolliders for the turret however i feel like there should be a better solution. example of what i want is like 'ultimate defense': https://www.kongregate.com/games/likwidgames/ultimate-defense ![alt text][1] [1]: /storage/temp/176280-unnamed.jpg for example these mages and archers only shoot when an enemy comes onto one of the two tiles in front of them.
