How to create a semi-intelligent trigger system?

Hello. My problem is that I have to be able to create a firing system that detects and attacks the enemy closer and when this enemy dies attack to the one that is behind and also that when an enemy is up and down another attack first the enemy that is find low and then the enemy above What I am looking for is to detect the proximity, height and attack in your attack line to the fence or down, My fighting area is similar to chess, but all are pawns that is just walk forward. Thank you
